1880 Federal Census

Matilda C. Blalock (1853-1880) died in 1880 leaving behind one son John Baxter Free (1879-1953), who at the time was very young. He was about 7 months old when Matilda passed.  Dred and Mary took the child in and raised him.

The census of 1890 was destroyed by fire. The only part to survive for North Carolina was  the census taken in; South Point Township, Riverbend Township and township #2 in Cleveland County.

In 1896 Etheldred Harrison Blalock (1817-1896) dies and shortly there after Mary Ann Campbell-Blalock (1820-1890) moves in with their son John Campbell Blalock (1856-1936). I do not know what happened to their grandson John Baxter Free (1879-1953). At the time of Dred's death he would have been about 16 years old. He is not listed in his Uncle's household in the 1900 Census.

On June 2nd, 1900 we find "Mary A. Blaylock" in the Federal Census of 1900 on page 2, line 28 living in Pigeon Township, Haywood Co., NC, USa. Mary is listed as widowed and the mother of the head of household her son, John Campbell Blalock (1858-1936). She lists her birth month and year as August of 1820. At the time of the census she is just a few months shy of her 80th birthday.

Mary died just a few years later in 1902 in the home of her son John Campbell Blalock (1858-1936) in Pigeon Township, Haywood Co., NC, USA. Currently her burial is unknown. Though we can safely assume she was buried in the Bethel Community Cemetery along with her husband Etheldred Harrison Blalock (1817-1896) and later the majority of her family.
